Summary: Mullaghmeen Forest
A walk through the largest beech plantation in Europe. And taking in the county high point - the lowest high point of all the counties in Ireland!
Description
Although Storm Eowyn has taken its toll, and storm Dave added somewhat to the damage, this is still a most enjoyable walk, particularly now in bluebell season and with the trees in their early stage of budding. The walk is designed to take in most of the wide pleasant trails through attractive woodland. We walk through an arboretum of native trees; we encounter evidence of an ancient Booley hut and a flax pit and the 17th century wall that divided Meath and Westmeath. There are views out over surrounding pasture-land to Lough Sheelin and to the Hill of Maol (of Diarmuid and GrĂ¡inne fame) and to Loughcrew. The walk includes the highest point in Co. Westmeath - a peak of just 261 m height.
The terrain is mostly soft underfoot though there are a few short stretches of loose gravel.
Gear Recommendations
There are a few short steep ascents and descents so poles are recommended.
Meeting Point Details
The meeting point is in the car park of Mullaghmeen Forest. To arrive in Mullaghmeen, from Dublin, via M3 or M4. Via M4, you go through Castlepollard and it is 12 mins from there. There is ample car parking space.
