Description
The lakeside paths and country road offer a picturesque view of the Victorian reservoir that was opened on 30 June 1863, an ambitious undertaking championed by Dr Sir John Grey MP (1815-1875), ally of Daniel O'Connell and proprietor of The Freeman's Journal. It created a reliable fresh water supply from 1871 in South Dublin to alleviate recurring episodes of cholera, typhus and other lethal diseases that killed thousands, as an alternative to contaminated water from the Grand and Royal Canal, local rivers and Juggy's Well at Pakenham Road Monkstown, which yielded 12 gallons a minute. Raw sewage and discarded water ceased to flow to the coast along the lanes of Urban District of Kingstown (DĂșn Laoghaire). Workers were accommodated in a temporary camp, known as 'Tin Town'.
