Description: Tymon Park is in South Dublin County Council area. It is a natural parkland of 300 acres between Templeogue & Tallaght. It is dissected by the M50 constructed in the 1980s, and has two major pedestrian bridges. The ponds and bigger lakes formed by the River Poddle support an abundance of birds and wildlife, and are of vital importance to the City of Dublin which makes this a most interesting area to explore. The River Poddle flowed from here to Dublin Castle forming the Moat in the 12th century, a black pool, giving the City its name Dubh Linne (Dublin) and then into the Liffey. As a result of climate change and storms, a flood alleviation scheme has been implemented both here and along the Camac River en route to the City to prevent the flooding which has occurred in recent years. The original farm hedgerows, old trees and meadows have been preserved throughout. We walk along an "esker" an ancient glacier-formed ridge of sand and gravel laid down over 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. We will pass the ruins of Tymon Castle (demolished as recently as 1960).
In addition to this, there are numerous sculpture and art works in the Park.
On another occasion, some of you may wish to bring your children/grandchildren here as there are many playgrounds and a wonderful Fairy Trail in the woods to explore.
Terrain & River Crossings: Mostly flat walk, paths have good surfaces generally, except passing through beech wood at beginning of walk, which is leafy & soft underfoot.
Gear Recommendations: Light walking boots, jackets, hats and gloves depending on weather. Walking poles for your own comfort.
