Description
We walk through the colourful Victorian-era streets of Cobh, visiting the town's major attractions. Our first stop will be the Cobh Heritage Centre, where we will have lunch. The Heritage Centre's multiple audio visual aids help to tell the town's fascinating maritime, military and emigration stories. From its origin as a modest fishing village, through its development as a major fortified naval base for the British during the Napoleonic Wars (1790s to 1815), to its role as the centre of early 19th century transportation to Australia and later Irish emigration to North America during the 19th and early 20th centuries, Cobh has now become one of the country's most interesting cultural and heritage locations.
We then visit the Sirius Arts Centre, which is based in the original premises of the Royal Cork Yacht Club (founded in 1720 as the Water Club of Cork and famously "the oldest yacht club in the world", now located in Crosshaven)..
Our walk next takes us through Casement and Pearse Squares when we visit the magnificent St Colman's Cathedral, designed by Pugin and Ashlin in the French Gothic Revival style. The cathedral, which sits high over the town and harbour, was constructed over a 47 year period beginning in 1868. Construction challenges included its sloping site and its sheer scale - its the tallest church in Ireland, with its steeple reaching 91 meters. Its stained glass and interior stonework, altars and woodwork are considered to represent the peak of Victorian-era ecclesiastic artistry and craftsmanship.
